Spectreck
This activity collects old pairs of spectacles from the public through reception points in community centres, chemists and doctor's surgeries.
The spectacles are sent to an organisation in France that cleans, calibrates and tags them.
The spectacles are then distributed by the Lions International Organisation to poor people, mainly in India and Africa.
In 2003/4 we collected 2,500 pairs of spectacles for this activity.
Lions district 105d, to which we belong, collected 85,000 pairs in the same timeframe.
Message in a Bottle
This activity places plastic bottles in Chemists, Doctor's surgeries and Community Centres which can be taken and used by those who have health problems.
The bottle contains a formatted paper which can be filled in to identify the owners medical and health problems with relevant telephone numbers.
They can also identify the requirements of their pets!
The Bottles are stored in the owner's refrigerator.
If the user has to call the emergency services, they will look in the refrigerator to obtain these details. It is particularly useful if the user is incapacitated.
Over 1,500 of these bottles have been used in our local area!
